E7 Reviewing Strategy

Governance Decision-Making Tool

Effectiveness and Resilience

How often should our strategy be reviewed?

It is important to have a strategic plan in place in order that an area stands the best chance of achieving its aims, and/or specific targets. It is also important that this is regularly reviewed, in order to remain in keeping with – for example – national strategies (see also here) and wider issues of concern to the public, as well as to ensure that any work being carried out can be seen as fitting within the strategy. As with reviewing the governance structure, this is a question of ensuring a consistent direction of travel on the one hand, and on the other, ensuring that the strategy remains relevant to key issues.

One means of devising a strategy is to set aims and objectives for one year, three years and ten years from when the strategy is decided. Progress towards these aims and objectives, as well as their remaining relevance, can then be reviewed on a yearly basis.
