E2 Communicating Performance

Governance Decision-Making Tool

Effectiveness and Resilience

How do we communicate our performance beyond our immediate board, particularly when we only have limited resource?

Communication with the wider population of a designated area is important for raising awareness of it. Similarly, in terms of communicating an area’s performance, it is important to have in place a communication plan with clear messages that could be directed at target audiences to highlight, in a tangible manner, what is being done in a designated area. The board or steering group of an area should therefore consider carefully how, and to whom, these key messages should be communicated. This will be influenced by other decisions, such as the overall aims of an area and how these help to determine the target audience for communication strategies, as well as wider issues of importance that may draw people in. More targeted communication such as this will help ensure that limited time and resources are used effectively.

Participants in the SHAPE project recognised that sometimes there is a need to be creative in how messages are shared – for example, holding exhibition of artwork influenced by a designated area. Using multiple social media channels can also be a quick and effective means of communication.
